Varicose are the veins that are swollen, enlarged and rising above the skin’s surface. These are commonly found on the legs and feet. They primarily occur when the valves in the superficial veins in the legs malfunction and the veins fail to close.

The blood that is ideally supposed to flow towards the heart flows backwards due to the open valve (venous reflux). The blood collects in the lower veins enlarges them. The resulting condition of the lower veins is called Varicose Veins.

The primary cause of Varicose Veins is the failure of valves in closing in the lower veins and not preventing blood to flow back down the legs. As you age, the valves in your lower veins may lose their elasticity and become stretched.

Causes of Laser Treatment

This can also occur in women due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, pre-menstruation or menopause. Being overweight can contribute greatly to the condition as there is more pressure on the veins. Ultimately, standing or sitting for long periods of time can encourage the condition due to non-flow of blood and weakening of veins.

Endovenous Laser Treatment

Varicose can be treated by a relatively novel procedure known as Endovenous Laser Ablation under the effect of local anesthesia on the legs. As part of the procedure, a laser fibre enters the affected vein and discharges an even dose of energy into the wall of the blood vessel. This causes it to collapse in a technique known as ablation. This forces the blood to flow through the nearby fully-functioning veins and improves the blood circulation. The procedure lasts about 30 – 40 minutes.
